How can I count the words in my document?

If the document is in Microsoft® Word® use the "Word Count" function in the Word® Tools menu, or you can use our word count tool. Just send us this number. Otherwise, if the document is in another format (printed, HTML, PHP, ASP, etc.) you can send us the file by e-mail or fax and we will count the words for you and quickly send you a quote.


How will our company-specific terminology be integrated into your translations?

Our project manager will, in addition to the documentation to be translated, ask you to supply any other necessary information: reference documents, previous translations (if satisfactory), glossaries, etc. to ensure maximum consistency and quality. We can create specialised glossaries using your existing documentation or in line with your instructions. We also use translation memory tools that enable the translator to be consistent with previous translations in terms of style and terminology.


Can you return a translated PDF document with exactly the same formatting and image placement?

If the PDF document was originally created from an editable document, such as with MS Word, Adobe Framemaker, InDesign, QuarkXPress, HTML and so on, than we will be able to return the document with exactly the same formatting. It will probably be with a different font size so that the expanded translation will fit, complete with images. You may send us the fonts you would like us to use for the layout of the translated documents. A PDF created from an image file can only be returned in a similar format.


What is localization?

Localization (also known as L10n) is the process of modifying a product (software, website and relevant documentation) for an audience in a different country, culture, or region of the world. Localization is more than translation because it involves cultural adaptation and requires knowledge of the local culture.


What if I don't have a style guide?

What is a style guide?

When companies produce a high volume of documents for publication, they require a method of ensuring consistency to preserve their branding and corporate identity. A style guide is a manual of standards for design and authoring documents. It will outline logos, typography, colors and layout rules, which must be respected in order to remain consistent with corporate direction and branding.


What if this is an update of an already existing localized product?

Updates costs typically vary with the percentage of change in the documents, help, and GUI. Translation memory tools ease the update and leveraging of old translations, so significant savings can be expected. However, file preparation, leveraging of previous translation, desktop publishing or QA will need to be done on all files, regardless of the percentage of change. This is why 25% of initial project costs are incurred with major updates. On average, a product changes about 15% from one release to another. It is therefore a good practice to budget approximately 40% of the initial project cost when updates are involved.

What is a termbase?

A termbase is a repository of single words or short phrases that have a unique or a specific meaning, requiring clarification for correct and consistent usage.

A termbase is the result of a highly skilled process that may be assisted by tools, but depends on expertise and discipline.

A termbase should be authoritative and definitive and therefore be respected systematically by the content supply chain from content creators, translators through to ICRs (in-country reviewers). Terms should be accompanied by a set of descriptive fields that explain correct usage.
